The 31st Congress of the Asian Football Confederation was held on Saturday through visual communication with Qatar Football Association (QFA) Executive Office member Hani Ballan and QFA Secretary-General Mansoor al-Ansari attending the meeting. Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifah, President of the AFC, welcomed FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who participated in the meeting and said: “Slowly but confidently, thanks to the unity of the members of the AFC, Asian football has continued to rise stronger from the darkest times, and now we are in a good position to take advantage of the many opportunities in front of us.”
The AFC President expressed his optimism that Asian football will continue to build on the solid pace of recovery achieved during 2021 to complete a historic year in 2022 when the world’s eyes will turn on the continent of Asia.
As for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the AFC President stressed the support of the Asian football family to Qatar, which will organise a tournament “worthy of the trust of world football, as Asia prepares to host the tournament for the second time in its history.”
Sheikh Salman said: “Twenty years after Japan and South Korea hosted the World Cup, this tournament will be the best evidence of the development that Asia has made, and it will reflect the great progress we have made together, as the Asian Football Confederation is determined to support Qatar to host the greatest edition in the history of the World Cup.”
The AFC President also referred to the recent decisions endorsed by the AFC Executive Board in order to strengthen the capabilities of the member national associations and regional associations and to consolidate the strong foundations that the AFC and member associations have laid during the last eight years to advance the level of the game in Asia at all levels.
The General Assembly approved the audited financial reports for the year 2020 and the budget of the AFC for the years 2021 and 2022 as well as the appointment of the external auditors for the period from December 2021 to December 2024.
