Al Arabi edged past Umm Salal 2-1 to set up an Amir Cup quarter-final match against Al Sailiya. At the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium yesterday, Arabi needed an 84th-minute penalty from Mehrdad Mohacammadi to secure a place in the last eight. 
Yasir Abubakar had given the last year’s runner-up the lead with his first goal for the club in the 28th minute. Eight minutes later Umm Salal equalised through a stunning strike from Anas Mubarak. The Ghanaian-born midfielder unleashed a right-footed thunderbolt from outside the box.
With the match heading for extra time and a potential penalty shootout, Arabi won a penalty which Mohammadi converted with a cool finish. 
Earlier, a brace from Iraqi striker Mohanad Ali helped Al Sailiya to a 4-2 win over Al Khor at the Grand Hamad stadium. Al Khor took the lead through Greek midfielder Ioannis Fetfatzidis in the fourth minute, but Sailiya responded in style, striking thrice in the first half.
Ali was the star of the show. The young forward scored his first goal in the ninth minute after a pass from Ramin Rezaeian. Thiago Bezzera then made it 2-1 in the 22nd minute, before Ali doubled the lead with a spectacular bicycle in the 35th minute. 
Al Khor reduced the deficit after Rafael Vaz found the net in the 77th minute, but Ahmed al-Minhali struck in the injury time to make sure there was no late drama. 
In other quarter-finals, reigning champions Al Sadd take on Al Gharafa. On Tuesday, Al Sadd had thrashed Muaither 7-0, while Al Gharafa needed a sudden-death tiebreaker to beat Al Shahaniya.
Al Rayyan, who edged past Al Markhiya 1-0, will take on Al Kharaitiyat, a surprise winner over Al Wakrah. Duhail meanwhile will face second division team Al Shamal in the last eight after the Red Lights routed Al Ahli 6-0. Al Shamal, meanwhile, had stunned Qatar SC 5-4 in penalties.
