The Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Monday launched the vehicle registration (Istimara) renewal service electronically through Metrash2 and the MoI website.
The system enables vehicle owners to get their Istimara renewed without having to visit the General Directorate of Traffic, and the registration card can also be delivered to an address of their choice, following the renewal, by post.
The move comes as part of the ministry’s strategic efforts to develop services across its various departments, its 2020 digital vision and the strategic goal of having a paperless ministry, the official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reports.
Brigadier Mohamed Saad al-Kharji, director-general of the Traffic Directorate, launched the new service yesterday in the presence of Brigadier Abdul Rahman Ali al-Maliki, assistant director-general of the MoI Information Systems Directorate, and Brigadier Abdulla Khalifa al-Muftah, director of the MoI Public Relations Department.

Explaining how the system works, the MoI said in a statement that once the technical inspection and insurance procedures are completed, a vehicle owner has to log into Metrash2 or the MoI e-services portal and select ‘Traffic Services’.
They should then choose ‘Vehicle Registration Renewal’ from the list of services, provide the vehicle plate number, choose the correct type of registration and then confirm the details provided.
The registration fee can be paid electronically using a credit card for individuals and direct debit from a bank account for companies, the statement notes.
Vehicle owners then have the choice of getting the registration card delivered to the address specified by them – through Qatar Post - or collecting it in person from any Traffic Directorate service centre.
All types of vehicles, including private, government and those owned by companies, can be renewed using this service and it works 24/7, the MoI has said.
Brigadier al-Kharji highlighted the importance of electronic traffic services in general and the significant impact it has on reducing procedures and lessening the number of trips made to and from the directorate. He called on the public to benefit from the Metrash2 service, whether for issues related to the directorate or for other service departments at the ministry.
Further, Brigadier al-Kharji noted that the directorate had earlier launched the registration of minor traffic accidents through Metrash2, without the need to wait for traffic patrols to carry out an investigation. Other services include transfer of ownership, transfer the ownership of a significant number plate and renewal of driver's licence, he added.
Brigadier al-Maliki said an applicant must complete vehicle inspection for cars that are over three years old and complete insurance procedures before applying for the renewal service electronically.
He stressed that the service will ease the process for applicants visiting the service centres, which currently carry out more than 4,000 transactions per day as well as more than 70,000 licence renewals transactions per month, according to the QNA report.
